I am retired now.  That does not mean I am retired from doing what I love, just retired from charging money for it.  I realized early on how expensive it was to hire a genealogy researcher.  I also realized that I love doing the research and the self publishing more when I am not charging money.

I cannot do the long projects anymore.  But I do like to help people locate their ancestors and if they like, to help them to pick the right format for the information they find.  In that spirit, if you have questions or would like a little help, I would be happy to help.
Since I last wrote on this Blog, many more self publishing companies have popped up.  I find myself using each company depending on what they publish, what deals are out there, and how good the quality is.

I have been using Picaboo lately.  They have a lovely selection of books at good prices.  If you use their voucher system you will get a good deal.  They have a $35.00 voucher good for a $100.00 layflat book.

I use Shutterfly for almost all my Christmas gifts.  They have everything from Home Décor, to posters and puzzles for children.  This year I made ipad covers for my grandsons.  They turned out great and the kids loved them.  They have books, prints and even pillows and blankets.  It is a great way to shop for special occasions and not leave the house.

If you like to play on the computer and make personal presents for your family and friends, you could find a worse way to spend your time.

I do not get paid for using these companies names.  I just like the things that I can do with their products.

My Favorite Thing...

My favorite thing about genealogy is everything.  Within that everything is collecting ancestor related ephemera.  My newest collection is of postcards.  I found pictures of Steiermark, Austria in a Austrian ebay.  That is where my great grandmother lived.  She had described the church and the mountains by her home, and there they were in the postcard.  It is a little bit of history I can save to show my grandchildren.  I have found books written by ancestors and books about churches that showed which pew my ancestors sat in.  They are even more real to me when I can see where they lived and went to church.  The postcards are under a dollar to $20.00 depending on the historical content.  It is a fun thing to do and most of the time, not very expensive.

Support independent publishing: Buy this book on Lulu.

I have published my first poetry and prose books. I did not ever think this day would get here. But I made up my mind I wanted to publish my poetry, and now it is published. No one but me has bought the books, but that is beside the point. I am just glad I did it. R

What if You are not Interested in Genealogy?

You can still write stories, make calendars and even personalized decks of cards and more. All you need are some photos and a few short stories about the photos. If you want to have an all photo no words book, that it ok too. I have a website to help you write your own story.
I have ideas on how to start a story. How to tell a story. And how nice the books can turn out. R

What I am Publishing Next

I am writing a family history book about one line of my family. It goes back about 5 generations and I introduce my ancestors and their spouses one generation at a time. It is not a long book. Nor do I go into great detail. It is a coffee table type book that starts my family on the journey to knowing their ancestors.
It seems to me, that if you keep up as you research, make a book on one branch of your family, then the information is out there. It is a great thing to share your family history and get the kids involved in their ancestors. Best of all, you are sharing the information. The more people who know the information the less likely the information will be lost to history.

Cousins are Family Forever

I have been so fortunate to meet so many new cousins. They are family by dna and family by choice. We always have something to talk about! Genealogy. We may not see each other often. We may never actually meet. But with email the world is quite nicely small enough to keep in communication. So tonight I want to make a shout out to all my new cousins. Hello Cousins. I hope your night is going well!

I especially want to say a special HI, to my oldest new cousin who thinks we should wear trenchcoats with Scottish Plaid Clan Scarves. She also thinks our ancestors may have been the first BC women who wore earrings and make-up. (That thought always makes me smile) Hello Cousin! Wish I was there. R

I am up North. I love it up North. But.....The technology is not stellar. We have 3G or so we are told. But....It works spotty at best. It is catch as catch can for my emails. And the cell service...Well__is_______good. And that is the truth. So until I have a better connection, when I am up north. I am really up North. (Without a technological paddle.) Here is hoping that 4G arrives up North soon. Rachel

Genealogy and Medical Family History

As I was making family trees for clients, I began to realize a medical history beginning to form. Things like pulmonary hypertension, heart and stroke, diabetes, and even aneurisms. At times it was amazing how strong the medical history ran through a line. As I had been a Station Secretary in a previous job, I realized that reporting this history to your doctor might be important. So now when I see that quite a few people in a family tree have died of aneurisms, for instance, I let my client know, and suggest they tell their doctor. It may be nothing or it may be something. I feel it is better to tell your doctor and let them decide. Making family trees is fun and informative about family history, it might also be a good way to find medical history in a line, too. I include medical family history in your tree, if I find it. That is why I feel it is important to have death certificates available for purchase on extended family members. It is a good way to know, officially, how someone died. It may just help someone avoid having medical problems which are genetically related by changing a lifestyle or catching the problem before it gets to be a problem.

I Keep Track of the Stats on my Site....Especially when My Site is this New...

So I want to say Hi! to all the people who have visited so far. Sometimes I write these little notes and I wonder if I am writing them to myself. It is good to know I am not. Thank you and Hi! to the people from Germany and Australia. I have ancestors from both places. Please leave me a note from time to time. I would love to hear from you.

It is so Much Fun to Have Cousins All Over the World

Before I started Genealogy, I only had 2 first cousins, and we weren't close. Now I have cousins in Canada, Dublin, New Zealand and all over the United States. We help each other by getting information or documents from our part of our country. It is great to see photos that I would never have seen if it were not for my cousins. Or to see marriage items in a local paper in Minnadosa Canada. It all fills in the tree with a little more story type information. Plus it is just nice to have the company for a little while on the journey to find more ancestors in different places. I hope I will be able to keep up contact with my new cousins. It is great to be able to have a world family who shares your dna and family experience.
